Tuya Smart Control Panel OEM: Screen Sizes, Protocols and Custom UI

Part of our Smart Home OEM Manufacturing Guide — the complete resource for brands sourcing from a smart home OEM manufacturer. In short, Tuya Smart Control Panel is the deciding factor for most buyers.

A wall-mounted control panel is the one smart home product a customer touches every day. It replaces a row of switches with a screen, and it becomes the visible proof that a home is “smart”. For brands already selling switches, sockets or doorbells, adding a Tuya-based control panel is the fastest way to raise average order value — but the category has more configuration traps than any other device in a catalogue.

This guide covers what a Tuya control panel manufacturer actually supplies, which screen sizes sell in which market, how the protocol choice changes what your panel can control, and what is genuinely customizable versus what is fixed by the platform.

What a Tuya control panel actually is

Three things are usually bundled under the same name, and quoting the wrong one is the most common sourcing mistake in this category:

  • A scene panel — a screen that runs Tuya’s own app logic, controls Tuya-paired devices, and often includes a built-in Zigbee gateway.
  • A whole-home host — a larger panel with a speaker, microphone and intercom function, sometimes sold as part of a video doorbell system.
  • A smart switch with a display — physically a switch, with a small screen for status and scene names.

Ask which of the three you are being quoted. The bill of materials, the firmware and the certification scope differ substantially, and so does the price.

Screen sizes and where each one sells

Size Typical use Where it sells Notes
4 inch Single-room scene control, replaces 1–3 switches EU apartments, hotel rooms, price-sensitive markets Fits a standard 86 mm wall box; the highest-volume SKU
6–7 inch Whole-apartment control, intercom display Middle East, Southeast Asia, new-build EU Often paired with a door station
8–10 inch Home automation host, video intercom, announcements North America, premium EU projects Tablet-class panel; needs deeper wall box or surface mount

If you are launching one SKU, the 4 inch Tuya control panel is almost always the right choice: it fits existing wiring in Europe, ships at the lowest unit cost and is the easiest to position as a switch upgrade. Larger panels sell well but need project channels — distributors, hotel contractors and system integrators rather than retail.

Protocols: what your panel can actually control

The protocol stack decides whether your panel is a scene switch or a real hub. Clarify all three layers before you commit:

  • Wi-Fi — the panel connects to the router. Present on every unit; required for cloud features and remote access.
  • Zigbee 3.0 — a built-in gateway that lets the panel directly pair sensors, switches and locks, and keep them working offline. This is the feature that turns a screen into a hub, and the one most buyers forget to specify.
  • Matter / Thread — increasingly requested in EU and US tenders. Support varies by platform generation; some panels handle Matter controllers, others only Matter end devices. Our comparison in Matter, Tuya and Thread in 2026 explains which layer you are actually buying.

One question resolves most confusion: does the panel keep working when the internet drops? If a supplier cannot answer immediately, assume local control is limited to the Zigbee layer and test it before you order.

What can be customized — and what cannot

Being clear about this up front prevents the most expensive misunderstanding in private-label hardware.

  • Usually customizable: boot logo and animation, default scene names, language set, wallpaper, packaging and manual, housing colour, frame finish, and the bundled app’s branding tier.
  • Sometimes customizable: UI layout, icon set, pre-installed device templates, and the list of paired brands shown during setup. These depend on whether the firmware is the factory’s own build or a locked platform build.
  • Rarely customizable: the underlying Tuya pairing flow, account system, and core firmware update mechanism. These live on the platform, not on your panel.

If your differentiation plan depends on a custom interface, confirm it in writing at quotation stage — and ask whether the firmware is maintained by the factory or by the platform, because that determines who can ship you an update two years from now.

Certification, and the cost of getting it wrong

A mains-powered panel with Wi-Fi and Zigbee radios needs CE and UKCA for the EU and UK, FCC for the US, plus RoHS and usually a radio directive assessment. If you plan to sell it alongside switches, treat the two products as separate certification projects — they are. The full approval path and realistic budgets are set out in Smart Home OEM Certifications Explained.

Panels sold as part of an intercom system may additionally fall under local building-wiring rules. Ask your distributor which national standard applies before tooling starts.

MOQ and the real cost drivers

Unit price on a control panel is driven by four things: screen size and panel grade, whether a Zigbee module is fitted, RAM and storage, and your branding level. Custom UI work is quoted as engineering time and is priced independently of unit volume. For a first programme, expect a private-label MOQ in the low hundreds per SKU with tooling shared across the platform — the mechanics are explained in the smart home OEM MOQ guide.

Budget for the recurring costs too: cloud service per device, app maintenance, and OTA hosting. A panel is a connected product, not a one-off shipment.

Eight questions to ask a Tuya panel supplier

  1. Is this a scene panel, an intercom host, or a switch with a display?
  2. Does it include a Zigbee 3.0 gateway, and how many child devices does it support?
  3. Which wall box does it fit — 86 mm round, 86 mm square, or 120 mm?
  4. Does it need a neutral wire? (Critical for EU retrofit.)
  5. What survives an internet outage — local scenes, Zigbee devices, intercom?
  6. Who owns and maintains the firmware, and can we control OTA timing?
  7. Which languages ship in the default firmware, and what does adding one cost?
  8. Is the UI customizable, or only the logo and packaging?

Suppliers who answer these quickly are usually the ones whose platform is genuinely theirs. Those who need to “check with engineering” for all eight are typically reselling someone else’s build.

Where a panel fits in your range

Control panels sell best next to products you already have. If your range starts with switches, the panel is the upsell; if it starts with a doorbell, the panel becomes the indoor monitor and intercom screen. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum order for a private-label Tuya control panel?

Typically a few hundred units per SKU for branding-only changes on an existing platform. Custom UI, tooling or a new housing moves the threshold up substantially. Ask for both numbers separately — they are quoted differently.

Can I put my own app on a Tuya control panel?

Not on the platform firmware. You can usually brand the app tier and the boot experience, but the pairing flow and account system belong to the platform. If you need your own app, specify an SDK-based build at the quotation stage.

Does a 4 inch panel need a neutral wire?

Many do. Neutral-free variants exist but limit load types and can cause flicker with LED lighting. Confirm with your target market’s wiring before choosing — this is the single most common cause of returns in Europe.

Which screen size should I launch first?

The 4 inch panel. It fits standard EU wall boxes, has the lowest unit cost and positions naturally as a switch upgrade. Larger sizes sell through project channels rather than retail.

Can the panel work without internet?

Local scenes and Zigbee-paired devices generally continue to work; cloud-dependent features such as remote access and voice assistants do not. Test this explicitly before signing off a sample.
